This is an island and there's no bridge (yes, we've heard that question) and no tunnel (that one too). Getting here requires that you come by boat (yours or someone else's), by helicopter or by plane (also yours or someone else's). The Catalina Express runs ferries from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point, and the crossing takes about an hour. Catalina Passenger Service runs from Newport Beach. Book your tickets on either one before you come — don't be the person who shows up at the dock hoping for the best. Private boat: Catalina Island is the most popular destination in Southern California. If you haven't brought your boat here and you can, you should. Maverick Helicopters offers daily service from several spots on the mainland. Catalina's Airport in the Sky is open to private planes.

You can drive to the ferry terminal. After that, you're on island time. Avalon is a walking town — most of it is golf carts and feet. Leave the car on the mainland and enjoy it.
